From Urban Foxes to Family Trees

In September Phoenix Arts had an exhibition which included the Our Place community project held in Brighton Festival. Graphic artist Ottilie Hainsworth worked with some members of Artspace to produce work which was then installed in East Brighton, outside the Wellsbourne Health Centre. The artwork is now in the care of “The Art Lady” Eve Turner Lee, and is now having a second lease of life at Leach Court.

Outside the exhibition

During Community Takeover a small group of Artspace artists came to the Phoenix to take part in two half day workshops on the theme of maps. Ottilie inspired our members to reflect on the concept of mapping and how this can be used to interpret thoughts and experiences in a visual form. The work in map/book form was exhibited for the public to enjoy in the gallery space. They chose where to hang their work and it was displayed in the exhibition.

In subsequent workshops Ottilie was able to show participants the maps Artspace had created as an example of imaginative and original approaches to the subject, which inspired their work in turn

One of our member artists said “This is brilliant! It’s the first time any of my work has been exhibited!”
